How To Start a Food Blog and Make Money In 2026

Last Updated: September 19, 2026

Want to start a food blogging business but keep putting it off because you’re waiting for the perfect idea or for more time?

I get it. I wasted years doing exactly that. I kept overthinking every detail instead of just getting started. Then I watched Sophia Lee’s course and had this lightbulb moment: she built a successful blog as a student with zero experience. If she could do it, so could I. And honestly, so can you.

Learning how to start a food blog and make money doesn’t require a perfect strategy from day one. You just need to take that first step and figure things out as you go. Your cooking blog can become a real income stream, but only if you actually start it.

In this guide, I’m walking you through exactly how to start a blog, from choosing your domain name to getting your first sponsored post. No fluff, just the practical steps that actually work.

These food bloggers prove that food blogging success is possible when you focus on quality content and consistency throughout the years.

How to Start a Food Blog and Make Money – Step By Step

Choose a Domain Name for Your New Food Blog

Before you do anything else, you need to name your blog and secure your domain. This is easier than you think.

Head over to Bluehost using this special link to get a FREE domain name for your first year.

Once you’re on the Bluehost homepage, click “Get Started” or “View Plans” and choose the Starter plan. This plan is ideal for new food bloggers and includes everything you need to get started.

On the next screen, you’ll see two options: register a new domain or use one you already own. If you don’t have a domain yet, type your desired blog name in the search box (like “tastykitchencorner.com” or “simplehomecooking.com”).

Bluehost will check if your domain is available. If it’s taken, try variations or if you need more time to think about it, click ‘I will choose later’ to secure this offer and continue to move forward with building your blog.

It’s better to keep your domain name short, memorable, and related to food or cooking. Avoid numbers and hyphens as they’re harder to remember and type.

Once you find an available domain, click through to secure it. You’re one step closer to launching your food blog!

Set Up Your New Blog on WordPress with Bluehost

Step 1 – After securing your domain, Bluehost will walk you through creating your account.

Step 2 – Create a password for your Bluehost account. Write this down somewhere safe because you’ll need it to access your dashboard.

Step 3 – Start building your WordPress blog: WordPress will be installed automatically on your new blog. You’ll see a notification saying “WordPress installation complete.” Click “Log in to WordPress” to access your dashboard.

Step 4 – Before you start building anything, go to Settings → Reading in your WordPress dashboard. Check the box that says “Discourage search engines from indexing this site.” This keeps Google from showing your unfinished site in search results.

Important: Remember to uncheck this box once your WordPress site is ready and live. Otherwise, nobody will find you on Google.

Now you’re ready to install a theme and start creating content.

The setup literally takes 15 minutes. You’re doing great!

Best WordPress Themes for Food Blogs

Installing a WordPress theme is incredibly easy. You don’t need any coding experience or technical skills to make your blog look amazing.

To install a free theme, go to Appearance → Themes in your WordPress dashboard. Click “Add New” and browse thousands of free themes from WordPress org.

Just click “Install” and then “Activate” on any free theme you like. That’s it.

However, an important thing to take into mind is that while a free WordPress theme gets you started, investing in a professional theme can make a huge difference for food blogs.

Why? Because food blogging is visual, and your recipe photos need to shine. A premium theme gives you stunning layouts, faster loading speeds, and features designed specifically for food bloggers, like recipe indexes and Instagram feeds, and most importantly, you get support for your questions if you get stuck.

Plus, when sponsors look at your site, that professional appearance signals you’re serious about your business. When your site looks professional, it will be easier for you to land your first sponsored deal simply because your site looks polished and trustworthy.

Here are 2 beautiful examples from my 2 favorite WordPress theme companies:

The first one is from Blossom Feminine WordPress Themes:

The second one is from the 17th Avenue:

I started my blog using a theme from Envato Elements, and it was one of the first investments I made because I wanted my blog to look great from the start.

Optimize Your Content for Search Engine Optimization

For the content you create to rank on Google, you need to follow SEO best practices: Focus on one specific keyword per blog post, use an SEO plugin to add your recipe titles and descriptions, and do keyword research for every new recipe you publish.

The problem is that basic SEO isn’t enough anymore to rank higher in search results.

You need to use an AI optimization tool for SEO to help you best optimize your content. These tools analyze top-ranking pages and tell you exactly what to include in your post to compete. If you want to start showing up on Google, this is a must.

The most popular are Neuronwriter and SurferSEO. I’ve been using Neuronwriter (on the lifetime deal) for almost 3 years now, and I love it. It has everything you need to optimize your content. It’s also much cheaper than Surfer.

SEO Tips for Food Bloggers

1) Always start with keyword research. Food blogging is competitive on Google. Before you publish a new recipe, do keyword research to find less competitive keywords.

2) Go after less competitive keywords. Instead of targeting “chicken recipes” or “chocolate cake recipe,” go after something like “Chinese chilli chicken.” This is a much better keyword because there’s less competition.

I use SEMRUSH for keyword research, site audits, competitor analysis, and everything else I need for search engine optimization. If you are looking for a more affordable keyword research tool to start with, I recommend you start with KeySearch. It’s easy to use and very cost-effective for beginner bloggers.

3) Set up Google Analytics and Google Search Console from day one. These free tools show you which posts are getting traffic and how people find you in Google search results.

4) Install Yoast SEO or Rank Math (the free version is enough). Then add a recipe schema plugin so your recipes appear as rich cards in search results, including your photo and ratings.

5) User experience matters not just for your readers but also for SEO. Use professional photos and present your recipes in a scannable, easy-to-follow format. Make sure you include a print icon in your recipes so customers can print them if they want (this is included in a recipe plugin).

6) Spy on your competitors: check your competitors regularly. See what recipe posts they’re creating and run those keywords through your research tool.

Most importantly: optimize EVERY post with your AI optimization tool before you publish it.  In time and as your blog grows, you’ll rank for more and more keywords. Patience and consistency are key here.

Best WordPress Plugins for Food Bloggers

The right plugins will save you hours of work and make your food blog more professional. Here are the must-have plugins every food blogger needs:

Recipe Plugin

This makes your recipes show up as recipe cards in search results with your photo, ratings, and cook time. It helps Google understand you’re a food blog and this post is a recipe. Plus, it organizes all your recipe details in a beautiful, easy-to-follow format. Most popular: WP Delicious and Recipe Card Blocks.

Pinterest and social media plugin

This plugin integrates your blog with Pinterest and lets you pick several pins for each post. When readers click the Pin It button, they can choose which image to share. I’ve been using HubbubPro for 3 years and it’s absolutely a must for bloggers.

Image Optimizer Plugin

Compress your photos to improve page load speed while keeping them crisp and professional. ShortPixel is extremely easy to use and I’ve been using it for years. Fast loading times keep readers on your site longer and improve your Google rankings.

Affiliate Links Plugin

Turn your messy, long affiliate links into branded, professional-looking links. Stay organized with all your affiliate links right in your WordPress dashboard, making them easy to find and edit as you go. I’m using PrettyLinks and I love it. You can also check the ThirstyAffiliates plugin. Both plugins are highly recommended.

SEO Plugin

These help you optimize every post for search engines. The most recommended are Yoast SEO or Rank Math. The free version of both plugins works great.

Start Posting on Pinterest

Once you get your blog up and running, it’s time to start being active on social media to drive traffic. For food bloggers, Pinterest is hands down the best platform.

Why? People go to Pinterest specifically to find recipes and food inspiration. They’re actively searching, not just scrolling. Plus, your pins keep working for months and years, unlike Instagram posts that die in 24 hours.

5 Pinterest Tips for Food Bloggers:

  1. Do keyword research on Pinterest to find searchable keywords for your recipes.

  2. Create vertical pins (1080×1920 pixels works best for me).

  3. Use bright photos that show the finished dish.

  4. Add text overlays with the recipe name on your pin images.

  5. Pin consistently, at least 1-2 times per day, using a Pinterest scheduler (I use Metricool).

  6. Create short cooking video pins. It catches the eye, stops the scroll, and increases your click-through rate.

Pinterest is my blog’s largest traffic source. I now have about 170k monthly views on Pinterest, with thousands of people clicking my pins and visiting my website each month.

If you’re new to Pinterest, I recommend taking a Pinterest course to follow proven strategies that work, rather than wasting time on trial and error. This is the Pinterest course I took and still follow to this date because it keeps updating with the latest strategies.

Promote Your Blog on Facebook Groups for Food Bloggers

Facebook groups are one of the fastest ways to get eyes on your new recipes.

Here’s how to promote your cooking blog in Facebook groups:

Join groups that allow recipe-sharing threads. Always read the group rules before posting. Participate genuinely by commenting on other people’s posts before sharing your own. Only share recipes that are relevant to the group you are posting in, not every single post you publish.

Most importantly, build real relationships and help other members of the group.

How to make money with a Food Blog

There are multiple ways to make money with a food blog, and the most profitable bloggers use several income streams at once. Here’s exactly how to monetize your blog.

Selling Products as a Food Blogger

Creating and selling your own products is one of the most profitable ways to make money because you keep 100% of the profits.

Recipe Card Boxes and Templates: Design beautiful recipe card boxes with your most popular recipes or sell digital recipe card templates on Etsy or your own site. People love using recipe cards, and this is a simple product to create once and sell repeatedly.

Cookbooks: Whether you sell an eBook on Amazon or on your own site or work with a traditional publisher for a hardcover, cookbooks give you credibility and passive income for years.

Meal Planning and Grocery Shopping Templates: Busy people will pay for done-for-you meal plans and organized grocery lists. Create weekly or monthly templates they can download and use immediately.

Online Cooking Course + Community: Use platforms like SKOOL to create a paid cooking course with a food blogging community built in. Teach your most loved recipes, cooking techniques, and host live cooking classes for your community and answer questions.

Affiliate Marketing for Food Bloggers

Affiliate marketing is how most food bloggers make their first dollars. You add an affiliate link to products you recommend, and when someone buys through your link, you earn a commission.

Best Affiliate Programs for Food Bloggers:

  1. Amazon Associates: The most popular option. Promote kitchen appliances like mixers, air fryers, slow cookers, and baking pans, and cookbooks.
  2. Impact – lots of kitchen appliances and furniture companies that will give you 5% – 10% on each sale you generate.
  3. ShareASale: apply to brands like Thrive Market and ButcherBox to promote kitchen products and meal delivery services.
  4. Prive Affilaite Offers: Sign up for private companies’ affiliate programs to promote high-quality kitchen appliances (like air fryers and mixers). Those usually pay higher commissions than what you’ll get as an Amazon affiliate.

How to Get Sponsored Blog Posts

Sponsored posts are when a company reaches out to you and offers to pay you for posting content promoting their products on your blog.

5 Tips for Landing Sponsored Posts:

  1. Create your media kit: Include your monthly traffic stats, social media followers, and a few examples of past collaborations.

  2. Create a list of potential partners you would like to work with: Create a spreadsheet with brand names, website URL, and contact details for companies you would like to reach out to in the future. Reach out to them and describe how partnering with you for sponsorship can bring them more potential customers.

  3. Join sponsored post networks: Platforms like ACTIVATE (formerly part of Bloglovin’) are looking for food bloggers for brand partnerships.

  4. Focus on increasing your social media engagement and number of followers: Brands care more about an engaged audience than huge follower counts. Even a few thousand engaged followers can land you profitable deals.

If you want to learn how to negotiate with brands, create your media kit, and get the most profitable brand deals, then check out this great course I took by Michelle Schroeder Gardner.

Display Ads

Display ads are the easiest passive income once you have traffic.

Journey by Mediavine: You can apply to Journey when you reach 1,000 monthly sessions and install their Grow WordPress plugin. Their dashboard is user-friendly, and they have an active community where you can ask your questions. This ad network pays much more than Google AdSense, and it is a great passive income source to add to your blog.

Mediavine Official: Once you reach 50,000 sessions (as shown on Google Analytics) in the last 30 days, you can apply to Mediavine. You will need to grant Mediavine access to your Google Analytics account so they can view your statistics.

Raptive (was called AdThrive): Another very profitable premium ad network to consider, similar to Mediavine. You will need at least 25k monthly sessions to apply and they have great customer service and profitable RPMs.

Start with affiliate marketing and sponsored posts while building your traffic to 1,000 sessions. Then add Journey by Mediavine for display ads. As your blog grows, keep adding new income streams. The most successful food bloggers make money from all these sources combined.
