Can You Make Money with a Blog in 2024?

Absolutely! If you want to start a profitable blogging business in 2024, you need to follow the right strategy, which we will cover in detail in this post. You also need to choose the right niche for your blog—one that is in demand and profitable but not too competitive. Later in this post, we will cover all of that so you’ll know exactly what to do.

Is Blogging Still Profitable, or Is It Too Late to Start a Blog?

You might ask yourself, is blogging still profitable if ‘everyone’ is doing it and all niches are highly saturated? Is it too late to start blogging? I will start with a short answer.

Yes! Blogging is still profitable! It is never too late to start blogging.

Why is it, you ask? Because there will always be new niches that arise, new and emerging trends in every space, new products, and more. You can always find low-competition niches and low-competition keywords to write about.

Is it too late to start a blog

The key is to do your research and find the right niche before you start putting your heart and soul into it.

How to Start a Successful Blog in 5 Steps

Research Several Niches Before You Pick Your Niche

Even if you think you‘ve already decided what you’re going to write about (because this is a topic you are passionate about or have a lot of knowledge about), think again!

Growing the blog and promoting it will require tremendous effort from your side. You want to take your time and do comprehensive research before you put all your time into something just to realize after a year that you are heading in the wrong direction!

Use Keyword Research Tools to Research Every Niche’s Main Topics

Are you able to find opportunities there? Is there enough search volume, but on the other hand, is there low competition for some of the keywords?

What are the monetization options for this niche?

Is it profitable enough? This is crucial!

Which products can you promote as an affiliate in this niche, and how much commission can you make for each sale? For example, if your blog is about books and your whole monetization plan is to promote books sold on Amazon and receive 4.5% of a $20 book (which is about $1 commission), you would need thousands of people to buy the book to make a few thousand dollars as an affiliate.

Are you planning to sell your own product? To start a sponsored newsletter? Will product companies sponsor a post on your site in this niche?

Brainstorm all these options before you start writing your first post! Relying just on ad income is not enough to start a profitable blog.

Only Invest in the Things that will Move the Needle

If you want to be profitable with your new blogging business, only invest your money in the things that will push your business forward. There is no need to sign up for the most expensive keyword tool in your first year of blogging.

For example, at the start, I decided to invest my money in courses instead of expensive tools because I knew that courses would shorten my path to success, and time is my most expensive asset.

If you don’t have the strategy and the roadmap to be successful in the business you are about to start, no expensive tool will take you there.

In my first year of blogging, I invested a few hundred dollars in a blogging and Pinterest course and an affiliate marketing course.

For building my blog, I invested in a WordPress theme and hosting and a few dollars a month for a keyword research tool.

When you start making money from your blog, you can subscribe to new tools to help you become more efficient. Also, in time, you will understand more which tools you really need and which ones you will not use that much and are not worth the investment.

Plan Your Transactional Posts and Create Your Content Plan Accordingly

Which products will you promote on your site? To improve conversions, it is best to only review products you are using yourself; that way, you can share your experience and results with this product and build trust with your audience.

When your readers see that you actually use the product, they start trusting the things you recommend, and when you build trust, your conversion is much higher.

5 Ways to Monetize Your Blog – How Bloggers Can Make Money

The compound effect is the best way to describe all these ways to make money blogging.

When you ‘invest’ in driving traffic to your site, writing more content on your blog, and recommending more products, you will see how your blog traction grows, and your income grows monthly (although you still put the same working time into your blog every week.

Here are the most profitable ways to monetize a blog –

1. Sell digital products

For almost any niche you blog about, you can sell digital products to your audience to simplify their lives. Digital products are easy to make and require a one-time investment of your time. You can even outsource some of it to a freelancer on Upwork to save you time.

Let’s explore some examples – if you are in the productivity niche, you can sell a habit tracker template, a goals tracker, or even an eBook. If you are in the health and diet niche – you can sell meal plans, cookbooks, eBooks, and more.

When you build an audience with your site, you don’t need to sell your products on other marketplaces, like Etsy, which means you can keep most of the profit to yourself.

2. Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is one of the most lucrative ways to make money blogging. Depending on the type of products you promote, the commission rates you get, and how much traffic you have, you can make thousands of dollars a month (or even more than 5 figures a month) just from affiliate marketing.

It’s good to understand upfront that affiliate marketing is a long game. It takes time to progress your blog to a point where you have tens of thousands of readers every month to your affiliate links, especially if you are only using Google traffic.

3. Ads on Your Blog

Making money with ads on your site is the best way to make passive income. Although it can take a lot of time to reach the point where you can apply to big media companies like Mediavine, once you are accepted, you can make a few thousand dollars a month without doing anything else. The work you are already doing consistently to drive traffic to your blog weekly is making you money not just in affiliate commissions but also from ads.

What are Mediavine requirements?

You would need at least 50,000 sessions on your site in the past 30 days (this is from your Google Analytics account).

You will also need original, long-form, engaging blog content to be eligible to the program, on top of the monthly traffic requirements.

4. Start an Email List

Building a list of subscribers for your blog content is one of the best ways to secure your monthly income and blog traffic. Think about it, Google can release new algorithm changes every month if it chooses to.

Because of that, blogs that only rely on Google organic traffic can lose almost all their income in a few weeks if their website is thrown away from search results.

The same goes for social media.

If you are only relying on Pinterest or Instagram to bring you traffic and Pinterest decides you have violated some of its guidelines and shuts down your account with a push of a button, all your hard work on this platform, your monthly traffic, and all your followers disappear in one day.

But, when you have an email list – this is your asset. People can always unsubscribe if they want to, but no one can shut it down. The people who subscribed to your email list are YOUR audience, not an audience of some social media platform.

On top of that, your subscribers are the highest quality traffic you can bring to your site. There are not random visitors to your site, these are readers that are interested in what you have to say and come to your site again and again to read your new posts and engage with your content.

This is why the people on your email list are also most likely to make a purchase of your products out of the gate and click on your affiliate links when you recommend the products you are using yourself.

5. Publish Sponsored Posts

A sponsored post on a blog is advertising content on your blog. A brand in your niche can approach you to advertise it on your blog as a way to reach a high-quality and targeted audience.

Some bloggers refer to writing the content themselves so it will look more natural, especially if they write the content from their perspective and show how they use this product and have been using it for many years.

In that case, adding a paragraph saying that this is a sponsored post is much easier, as the readers still get the perspective and unique voice of their favorite blogger.

For example, suppose the blogger is a dietician recommending a specific protein shake they have used for years. In that case, their audience will be happy to follow this recommendation and buy it even if the blogger indicates this is a sponsored post.

The fact that this content blends with the rest of the blog posts, as it looks like another ‘How To’ post or a post review, provides the readers with a more engaging experience than just stumbling upon an advertisement.

Sponsored posts can pay from a few hundred dollars (for new bloggers) to a few thousand dollars and above. This can add up to significant revenue as the blog grows. It is important to choose your sponsors carefully and only recommend products and services you use yourself. Otherwise, you will lose the audience’s trust that you worked so hard to build.

The Fastest Way to Make Money Blogging – 5 Steps

If you want to fast-track your success and start earning money from your blog in the first few weeks, follow these 5 steps –

1. Find a niche with low-medium competition on Google that is still in demand

It’s all about the balance. Of course, very high-demand niches will be over-saturated and hard to compete with. However, good research will bring up niche ideas you haven’t thought about that can be less competitive and require less effort from your side.

2. Plan for at least 5 Profitable Products You Can Promote

Before you start, check if there are at least 5 highly profitable products that you van promote and earn affiliate commissions. If the only products you can think of are selling for a few dollars or your commission will be very low, it’s better to drop that niche idea and continue your research.

3. For Fast Wins on Google, Find Emerging Trends

To start showing on the first page of Google in your first 3 months, use Google Trends, Exploding Topics, or Glimpse.

All these tools can uncover keywords that are starting to be searched a lot on Google, but the competition on Google is still very low, as your competitors haven’t picked up on these trends yet.

This is the best way to get quick wins on Google and bring more organic traffic fast.

4. Write and Publish at Least 2 New Blog Posts on Your Site Every Week

For sure, writing at least 2 blog posts a week will shorten your way to success. The problem is that every person’s circumstances are different. You might have a full-time job and children to take care of. At the end of the day, it all comes down to what you can commit, taking into account your circumstances.

It is better to do what you can, whether it is one blog post a week or even one every two weeks, than not start at all.

The compound effect will work, and in time, you will start seeing your traffic grow steadily and, with that, your affiliate commission earnings.

5. Start Using Social Media Ads

The number one limitation that prevents you from making any money in your first 3-6 months is traffic to your site.

As your blog is new and doesn’t have credibility yet, in Google’s eyes, it will be very hard to rank on the first page, even if you have the best content and your keywords have low competition.

Driving traffic from Pinterest, for example, is cheap. If you plan it right and drive traffic to a transactional post that offers high-ticket affiliate products, you can potentially start making money from your blog very fast.

Which Type of Blogs Make the Most Money?

Choose a profitable niche!

The most profitable blogging niches are finance, wealth, business, AI, education, health and diet, home design, and marketing. The reason is that there is a lot of demand in these niches, and there are a lot of high-ticket products for which you can be an affiliate.

The problem is that these niches are highly competitive on Google, and it can take you more time (even years) to rank for high-volume keywords.

Less competitive niches that can be profitable are hobbies (like crochet, woodwork, knitting, and DIY projects), specific diets (like gluten-free or cooking for picky eaters), pets, and indoor gardening.

Do research to make sure you are not wasting your time chasing niches that are too hard to compete in or not profitable at all.

The Future of Blogging and How to Start a Blog in 2024 and Be Successful

1. Don’t rely only on Google to bring you traffic.

To start your blog the right way and secure your blogging business, you must generate traffic to your blog from multiple sources and, in the beginning, from at least one social media channel. If you only rely on Google, the risk of losing all your income in one month is very high just because Google had another algorithm update. Choose one social media channel you know your audience is using and start promoting your content there when your website is up and running.

2. Write about products that you truly use.

If you want to be successful as an affiliate marketer – only recommend products that you truly use and love. That way your review of the product will bring a lot of value to your readers and you will also gain trust and increase the chances that your readers buy the product.
Add photos and videos to your review so your readers can get the complete experience of what it is like to use that product. This will also help you gain more credibility.

3. Start a YouTube Channel

There are 3 significant advantages to starting a YouTube channel on top of your blog –

Google LOVES YouTube videos.

When you add a YouTube video to your blog post, Google will rank your post higher in search results, and your video might even appear on the first page of Google as a separate result.

Improve the Average Time Spent on Your Posts

A video embedded in your post will increase the time readers spend on that specific post.

The more time people spend on your post, the better chances that Google will rank you higher in search results. Google doesn’t like pages that people spend one minute on and move on to click on another result to search for what they have been looking for.

If someone spends a lot of time on your page and then ends the search, that means to Google that your content is high quality and relevant to that specific page.

Increase  Your Affiliate Commissions

YouTube videos have a much higher conversion rate for affiliate income than content that is delivered in a text format. Videos are much more engaging and can offer an easier way to deliver training on specific tools, for example.

Adding an affiliate link below your video is easy, and as your views grow, so do the clicks on your affiliate links.

4. Build Topical Authority

To push your blog posts higher and make them stay on the first page for a long time (maybe years), you will have to show Google that your website specializes in that topic. The more content you have about a specific topic, the more topical authority you have

5. Build a Community

Build an email list that will want to return to your blog every time you publish new content. This highly engaging community is another traffic source for your site. Your emails are also a great opportunity to promote affiliate products or even sell your own products.
