How to start a print on demand business in 2026 – step by step guide!

Last Updated: June 7, 2026

Want to build an online business without risking thousands upfront?

Most people assume starting an ecommerce business means buying inventory, managing logistics, and handling shipping themselves. However, this POD business model I’m about to show you removes all of that friction.

A print-on-demand business lets you sell custom products like t-shirts, mugs and tote bags without ever touching inventory. You don’t pay production or shipping costs upfront. You only get charged after a customer makes a purchase. No risk. No wasted money on products that don’t sell.

This is why so many people are choosing to start a print-on-demand business. It’s the easiest way to start ecommerce with minimal investment and maximum flexibility. The process is mostly automated. Shopify and your fulfillment provider handle everything, you just focus on design and marketing.

In this guide, I’m going to walk you through exactly how to launch your POD store from scratch, step by step. I will show you how easy it is to start a pod business with no investment, no inventory, and no design skills!

How to start a print on demand store

What is a Print on Demand Business & Why It’s Profitable

Ok, so here is how a print-on-demand business works: you create a design, upload it to a print-on-demand service provider, and they will handle all the rest.

Here’s why this model is so profitable. There’s zero upfront risk. You don’t buy inventory. Production and shipping fees only get charged after a customer places an order. So if your design isn’t selling, you don’t pay anything. Testing new products is completely free.

This business model is mostly passive too. You don’t create the product, ship it, charge clients, or send receipts manually. Your POD supplier and Shopify handle all of that automatically. The only thing left for you to do is answer customer emails.

You build a real business with almost zero friction or upfront investment.

How Does Print on Demand Work?

The process is straightforward. Here’s exactly what happens.

Step 1: You create a product design.

Step 2: You choose a print provider and upload your product photo to your ecommerce store, then connect it to your print provider.

Step 3: When a customer buys one of your products, the POD company gets the order and fulfills it automatically (they print and ship it for you).

Step 4: They charge you for the fulfillment and shipping.

That’s literally it. You’re not managing any of the production or logistics yourself. Your print provider handles manufacturing, quality control, and getting the product to your customer’s door. You just sit back and collect the profit.

It’s hands-off once the order comes through, and it’s one of the best passive income business models out there!

Where to sell POD products?

You have two main options: a marketplace or your own store. Let me break down each one.

Selling on Etsy

The Etsy marketplace has a huge audience already searching for products like yours. That’s the main advantage. However, there are 2 huge disadvantages that I discovered when I started selling on Etsy. First, you can’t build your own audience or email list. Second, you’re also constantly competing on price, which is never a good strategy for a profitable business.

Selling on Shopify

A platform like Shopify lets you build your own brand from day one. You own the email list that you can use for future sales. There are no upfront costs either.

On Etsy, it’s like you’re renting a space in a store. On Shopify, you own the store. No other sellers are there with you.

If you want to dive deeper into which platform can make you more profit and how much you will pay in fees at the end of the day, check out my post: Etsy vs Shopify to Make More Money.

Although the Etsy marketplace has its own advantages, such as a huge audience already searching for products like yours, it is not the best platform to build a brand and grow your business in the long run.

Print on demand product ideas

You don’t have to pick the perfect product right away. But choosing the right niche matters.

T-shirts and hoodies are the obvious choices because they’re easy to design and sell consistently. But home decor is where demand is growing. Wall art, throw pillows, mugs, and personalized blankets are all moving fast.

People are constantly redesigning their spaces and looking for unique pieces that reflect their personality.

Putting the time into doing proper research is a great way to start your online business. Don’t just guess what sells.

Look at what’s actually trending in your niche. See what your competitors are doing. Understand who’s buying (your target audience) and what they need.

How to Do Market Research

Market research is the foundation of a profitable POD business. There are three solid ways to start, and they’re all free.

Using EverBee for Etsy

Using EverBee and searching for your product idea on Etsy, you can see stores’ monthly sales, monthly revenue for each product, search volume, and competition for every listing. This tells you exactly what’s selling. No need to guess. EverBee is my favorite Etsy tool and if you haven’t tried it before, you can learn about all the EverBee features I am using here.

Checking Amazon

Visit Amazon and search for your product category. Look at the top-selling products and read their reviews. Check which designs get the most reviews and highest ratings. Use Amazon’s search bar autocomplete to see what people are typing. This shows real demand.

Using Google Trends

Search your product idea on Google Trends (it’s completely free). You’ll see if interest is growing, declining, or seasonal. Use the related topics section to find variations people are searching for. This tells you what’s trending before everyone else jumps in.

These tools like EverBee Etsy tool, Amazon search, and Google trends data, give you confidence before creating anything.

How to Start a Print on Demand Business in 2026 – Step by Step

1. Set Up a Shopify Free Account

At this time of writing, Shopify offers the best deal to start an online store, practically for nothing.

Using this link, you can get 3 days for free and then 3 months (!) of paying only $1 a month which means you will be able not just set up your store but also get at least 10 weeks of selling before you start paying for your online store (and even then, you only need the basic plan which is very affordable).

Shopify keeps changing its offer from time to time, so depending on the time you are reading this post, the offer might be different.

Step-by-Step to Create a Shopify Account

Here’s exactly how to set up your Shopify account. It takes about 10 minutes.

1. Click this link, then “Start your free trial”.” You get 3 days completely free, then just $1 a month for the next 3 months. That’s a pretty solid deal.

2. Fill in your email address and create a strong password. Click “Create Account.”

3. When you’re asked to choose a plan, select the Basic plan. It’s more than enough when you’re starting out.

4. Add your payment details. Important: you won’t be charged the $1 a month yet. You’ll get your 3 days free first.

5. Shopify will ask you a couple of quick questions: “Where would you like to sell?” (Online store) and “Is this for a new or existing business?” (New business idea).

6. Check your email inbox and confirm your email address. Your account is now live.

2. Select a Name for Your Online Store

Now it’s time to give your online store a name. The goal right now is just to get moving, so it doesn’t need to be perfect.

Pick something that makes sense for your brand or niche. If you can’t decide on a name yet, that’s ok, you can do it later on (inside your dashboard) when you finish setting up your store, and you are ready to hit publish.

Once you enter your store name and click forward, you’ll land inside your Shopify dashboard.

This is where you’ll manage everything moving forward. You can always return to your Shopify admin home page by clicking the Shopify logo in the top left corner anytime you need to.

3. Connect your new domain to Shopify

You have a free domain that Shopify created for you. But if you want a branded domain that actually represents your business, here’s how to connect it.

Step 1: Go to Settings

In your Shopify dashboard, click on “Settings” at the bottom of your left-hand menu.

Step 2: Click on Domains

You’ll see the free domain Shopify created for you (which you can use for free).

Step 3: Choose Your Option

You have two choices: buy a domain directly through Shopify by clicking “Buy New Domain,” or connect an existing domain you already own.

My Recommendation

Register your domain with an external domain registrar. That way, you always have full control over it, no matter which ecommerce platform you use in the future. I like to purchase domains through NameCheap because they offer some of the lowest prices for high-quality domains like .com. If you’re planning to sell globally, a .com domain is the best option.

Important Note

If you run into trouble connecting your domain, contact your registrar directly for help. Global propagation (the time it takes for your domain to update across all DNS servers worldwide) can take up to 48 hours, so don’t panic if it doesn’t connect instantly.

Shopify buy new domain or connect existing domain

4. Select a Shopify Free Theme

Shopify offers free and paid themes. If you are just starting out, there is no need to pay for a theme, and you can use one of the free ones. I personally love the Craft theme, which has a minimalist look, and it is the most highly rated theme on Shopify (and it’s free).

⇒ Click here to follow my step by step guide to install the Shopify Craft theme.

5. Set Up a Free Printify Account

As Printify is one of the best print providers with more than 1300 products you can customize and sell on your store, this is the print provider I will use to show you a full setup.

Here is how to set up your free Printify account:

Click this link to open a free Printify account.

Fill out your email address and create a password

Answer the short survey questions

Click the green button, and that’s it!

Important Printify Settings:

Set up your payment method – add your credit or debit card details so you can pay Printify the production and shipping fees once your customer pays for the order. What’s important to understand is that when the customer pays for the order, you won’t get the money right away, as it takes Shopify a few days to process the payment and transfer the money to you.

Your POD provider needs to start making and shipping the product straight away and this is where you will be charged a few days before, while you are waiting to receive the money from Shopify.

6. Connect your print on demand provider to Shopify

Here is how to connect your new Printify account to your online store by connecting from Shopify:

  1. Head over to your Shopify store dashboard
  2. Click on ‘Apps’ (in the left-hand menu)
  3. Search for Printify
  4. Install the Printify app
  5. Select ‘Log in to an existing Printify account’
  6. Once it’s connected, you will see the Printify app on your Shopify left-hand menu

7. Create your product design to sell custom products

Now it is time to create your first product design and today it is so much easier than you think. You don’t need any design skills whatsoever; you can create a unique design with an AI image generator. You can use Canva or Kittl AI image generator.

Here is how to create your design using the Kittl AI image generator:

Open a free Kittl account.

When you log in to your dashboard, you will see the Generate Image button (or you can click on ‘New Project’, then select it on your left menu).

Choose the size of the design you want to create (in my example, this is 1×1)

Choose the AI Model (I chose Nano Banana2)

Choose the style (I chose Smooth Ink)
Write a detailed prompt, this is very important to generate the result you want.
Choose how many images you want to create, then click ‘Generate’.

Once you get the result, you can continue to edit your prompt and make changes. I am going to choose the illustration on the left, it is super cute!

When you are happy with the design, just download it in high resolution (important to note that for downloading in high resolution, you will need to upgrade your Kittl account).

8. Upload your product design to your POD Platform

Now that you have your design and a fulfillment platform, all you need to do is create your first product.

How to create your first product with Printify:

1. To select the product you want to create, head over to the Printify menu and click on ‘Catalog’ (I recommend starting with one of their bestsellers).

2. On the product’s page, you need to select a specific supplier to fulfill your orders, because Printify doesn’t do it themselves. Printify is just connecting you as a seller with a global network of printing suppliers who will create and ship the product for you.

‘Printify Choice’ button: This means that Printify will automatically choose the supplier for you once a customer is placing an order. If you want to ship orders worldwide from the customer’s local supplier, this is a good choice.
If you selected this choice, all you need to do is scroll down the page and click the ‘Start Designing‘ button.

‘Choose Manually’ button: This means you will select the supplier from a list of suppliers. As you start experimenting with different suppliers, you will be able to choose the one that produces the highest print quality.

If you selected this option, click the ‘Start Designing‘ button next to the supplier you chose.

3. Upload your product design (or use Printify Image Generator). If you create a design yourself, make sure it is high resolution, this is extremely important for a high-quality result.
In this example I chose a mug, in the screenshot below you will see the area where you will place your design.

4. Click ‘Save Product’,

5. Click ‘Preview’ to see how your designed product will look like. From there, you can go back to editing, and when you finish, just hit ‘Publish‘.

6. Add lifestyle product images using Kittl

9. Create lifestyle mockups in Kittl

If you want to create simple mockups, you can use Kittl, and here is how to do that:

Log in to your Kittl account.

On the left menu, select ‘Mockups’

Select a mockup for your design. In this example, I selected a t-shirt (from the free mockups)

Drag your design into the green box.

If you want to generate more visually appealing professional lifestyle mockups, I would recommend checking out PlaceIt (by Envato), a dedicated platform for high-end ecommerce lifestyle photos.

Their best deal is unlimited designs that you can create and unlimited downloads, including mockups, images, and more, for only $7.49 a month. You can check all the details below.

10. Create Product Collections

Now it’s time to organize your products into collections by category (for example, t-shirts, tote bags, mugs, etc.).

Here is how to organize your products by categories on Shopify:

Head over to ‘Products’ – then click ‘Collections’ and ‘Add a collection’.

Add a name for your collection and choose the products you want to add manually.
Before you finish, choose one of your product lifestyle images as the collection image

Add product collection shopify

11. Customize all your product pages

Add description to all your product pages.

To do that, just head over to ‘Products’ (on your left menu), where you will see a list of all your products. Click on each of them to add a title and a description, and you can use AI to help you craft an engaging description for your products.

Upload your product lifestyle images to your product’s page.

Add the product’s price.

12. Product’s page SEO Optimization

When you scroll down your product page, you will see how your product page will look in Google search results. This is your meta title and meta description, and it’s the most important place to fill out with a relevant keyword and semantic keywords so Google will know what type of product this is. This will increase your chances of ranking this product page in Google for relevant searches. Click on edit to edit this section.

13. Enable Shopify Payments

Shopify Payments is the secure system Shopify offers to collect payments from customers (via debit or credit cards) and transfer them to you.

Click on ‘settings’, then ‘Payments’ – ‘Set up Shopify Payments’ and add all your business and bank account details.

14. Shipping

To select which countries you want to allow shipping to. To do that: head over to ‘Markets’ (on the left menu), then click ‘Create Market’ and select each of the countries you are willing to ship your product to.

After setting up your chosen markets, you can now see Printify suppliers’ shipping rates for each market. To see the shipping rates:

Go to ‘Settings’, then ‘Shipping and Delivery’.

15. Connect Social Media Pages

If you have already created social media profiles on Instagram, TikTok, or Pinterest, you can connect them to your Shopify store by adding their URLs in ‘Settings’.

This will show your social media icons on your website, and people can click these icons and start following your business profiles.

16. Add Your About Page

People want to know who they are buying from. This is the place to talk about your brand story: why you started your store, what you believe in. Add some behind-the-scenes photos so people can feel more emotionally connected to your brand, and also can see this is a real business. Write about your location, where the products are being manufactured and shipped from, and any other interesting details.

To add a new page to your store: click ‘Online Store’, then in the drop-down menu, click on ‘Pages’ and then ‘Add a Page’.

17. Add Legal Pages

Before you launch your online store, you need a few legal pages in place. These protect both you and your customers, and Shopify actually requires them.

The Five Pages You Need

  1. Return and refund policy: Covers when customers can return products and get refunds or exchanges.
  2. Privacy policy: Explains how your store collects, uses, stores, and protects customer personal data.
  3. Terms of service: Outlines the rules and agreements between your store and customers when they make a purchase.
  4. Shipping policy: Details your shipping methods, delivery timeframes, costs, and where you ship to.
  5. Contact information: Gives customers ways to reach you if they have questions or issues.

How to Add Legal Pages to a Shopify Store:

Click on the “No Policy Set” button inside your Shopify settings. Shopify offers a basic legal page template for each one. Click “Insert Template” and it will autopopulate with default content.

This is a general template, so you’ll need to customize it to reflect your specific business and products, however, it’s a great starting point.

From there, you can use ChatGPT to refine the content and ensure it’s accurate for your business.

18. Set up your store currency

Go to ‘General’, then scroll down to the ‘Store Defaults’. Change your store currency to match the main market you are selling to.

So if you are in Australia but your main market is the US, then it’s recommended to change the settings to US dollars.

19. How to publish your store

Here’s the final step. Head to “Online Store,” then click “Preferences.” Find your storefront password and disable “Password Protection”. Once you remove the password, your shop is live on the internet, and you are ready to start selling.

20. Order Samples & Check Product Quality

Explain why it is good to order your own product to make sure the product quality is as you expected, making sure that your design looks good, and to test out the suppliers yourself. In time, you will identify the suppliers that produce the highest-quality products for your specific products.

21. Start Your Email List

Important to start your email list straight away and collect leads. Your store visitors are all potential customers that you can send information about upcoming sales, new product launches, limited-time coupons, and more. Kit (formerly ConvertKit) is my favorite platform for email marketing, and it also integrates with Shopify.

Email marketing is one of the best marketing strategies for building a sustainable, profitable business, and having your own store (rather than being part of a crowded marketplace like Amazon or Etsy) offers the greatest growth potential and profitability.

FAQ

Starting a POD business requires a minimal upfront investment. Let me break down the actual costs.

Shopify Setup

Shopify's special offer is 3 days free, then just $1 per month for 3 months. After that, the Basic plan is $39 per month (a fixed amount, not dependent on your sales volume!). In your first 3 months, you're looking at about $3 total for Shopify.

Printify Fulfillment

Printify's free plan costs nothing to set up. You only pay when a customer places an order. There are no monthly subscription fees (unless you upgrade to the Premium plan, which is not necessary when you're just starting out).

Real Example: Selling a t-shirt for $35

Let's say a customer buys a t-shirt from you for $35:

  • Product cost (Printify): ~$10 - $12
  • Shipping: ~$3.5
  • Payment processing fee (2.9% + $0.30): ~$1.32
  • Total cost: ~$15.82
  • Your profit: ~$19.18 (about 55% profit margin)

That's the reality. You have minimal upfront costs, and your profit margin comes straight from the difference between what customers pay and what it costs to fulfill the order. No inventory risk. No wasted money on unsold products.

Yes, print-on-demand is still profitable in 2026.

Here's why: POD is just an easy business model to start an ecommerce business without the initial costs, manufacturing, and shipping the products yourself.

For it to be profitable, you need to know which products are best to sell and what designs are trendy. Think about your business as a brand from day 1, not just a random store.

Start collecting email addresses right away. Your email list is where the real money is. Post on social media consistently. Show your designs, tell your story, engage with your customers. The competition exists, but most people quit before they do any real marketing work.

If you do the work, you'll be profitable.

If you are actively driving traffic to your online store (like posting short videos on TikTok and Instagram), you can start earning money in your first month! It is all a numbers game.

The more traffic you bring to your store, the more you will increase your chances of making money and building your email list faster. This is why the current special offer from Shopify is so useful: you get 3 months where you're practically paying nothing ($1 a month), so you have time to build your shop and start marketing it to the world.

Start a Print-on-Demand Business – Take Your First Step

You now have everything you need to build a successful pod business and become an e-commerce business owner. The path is clear.

Create your Shopify and Printify accounts, then connect them. Create a few designs and publish your store. Don’t procrastinate. You don’t need to have tens of products in your store to publish it. You need a few to get going, start making sales, and learn as you go.

It doesn’t have to be perfect on day one. It just has to be started.
