19 Blogging Mistakes That Will Cost You a Fortune in 2025

Common Blogging Mistakes and How to Fix Them

1. Investing in expensive tools before you’re making a profit

Don’t be tempted to invest money in costly tools (especially ones with high monthly payments) If you are not making money from your blog yet.

The truth is that starting a successful blog doesn’t require you to invest in expensive tools. What matters is the strategy you implement and your dedication.

You can start a blog for a few dollars a month + a free domain.

The only investment I made in my first year of blogging (besides hosting and a WordPress theme) was purchasing By Sophia Lee’s blogging course.

2. Not Optimizing Your Site for Mobile (poor mobile optimization)

Did you know that it is predicted that by 2025, more than 70% of internet users will exclusively use mobile devices to access the internet? (stats by ExplodingTopics).

That means that first and foremost, your blog and every post that you write need to look perfect on mobile. Here are some points to consider –

  • When choosing a new WordPress theme, make sure it is optimized for mobile. It’s better to look at the theme from different screen sizes to see if you like the result.

  • Every time you publish a new post on your site, open this post on your phone and look at how it looks.

Is the font big enough? Do you have enough line breaks? How do your images look on the page?

  • Check your website’s home page, opt-in pages, blog categories page, and posts—are they all mobile-friendly? If not, start making the necessary changes now.

  • It is better to set this up right from the start and before your blog has hundreds of pages that you must fix.

3. Not having a clear target audience in mind

If you write your blog posts for everyone, different audiences with different interests and problems, then no one will read them.

Writing about different topics and addressing various audiences in one blog usually results from chasing keyword trends and trying to rank fast on Google with a new keyword that no one has written about before.

This is a huge mistake, and it will probably affect your rankings on Google, as Google can’t understand what your blog is about.

Choosing your target audience is part of choosing your blog niche. When selecting your niche, think about the type of person most interested in this topic. Are you writing to new moms?

Are you a travel blogger writing about family-friendly places to visit? This means that your target audience would be young parents.

When you write a post with a specific avatar in mind, your content becomes highly engaging, and your conversion rate will increase.

4. Not keeping your personal details private (having ‘privacy’ for your domain details)

When you buy a domain name for your new blog, you must include your full name and address.

Unless you’ve purchased a ‘domain privacy’, your personal details will be visible to everyone in the WHOIS database.

When your personal information is available for everyone to see, hackers can easily attack your website or make all kinds of manipulations, including identity theft.

This is why it is always recommended to add privacy protection to your domain name so your personal details will be kept private with your domain registrar.

⇒Here is how to protect your domain details.

5. Only Relying on Stockphotos

Choosing only stock photos for your blog posts is a big mistake. Google likes to see original images that add more value to your reader than generic ones everyone uses.

Be creative with your images. If you write a step-by-step guide, include a photo or screenshot of every step. Another tip is to add your notes on the image to make it your own (this is easy when you show how to use software, for example).

6. Not updating your Blog Posts

The big advantage of a blog post, as opposed to a YouTube video, for example, is that it can be updated and changed without limit for years to come.

When you update your posts, you keep them relevant and up-to-date with what the reader is looking for, and you help promote your blog on Google.

Keeping all your content up-to-date can be overwhelming at the start. This is why bloggers sometimes neglect the old content on their sites and focus all their efforts on publishing new content.

Remember that every piece of content on your site is another brick in your blogging business. If you keep your content up-to-date, your results will continue to accumulate, and your traffic will continue to grow.

7. Not Choosing a Niche

Writing about everything that looks like a good opportunity for you to bring traffic or earn affiliate commissions might seem like a good idea at the start, but it is actually one of the biggest blogging mistakes and is also very common.

You might say, but hey, aren’t these big media sites like Forbes or CNN doing just that? Aren’t they covering multiple topics under the same roof?

Well, although it is correct that these media sites do not focus on just one niche, this is not the case when you start blogging.

In the beginning, Google needs to understand your site’s main topic in order to rank you on relevant searches.

One of the best practices for new bloggers is to build topical authority in one niche. You can achieve this by going deep into one topic and covering all sub-niches in this topic, including informational posts, transactional posts, how-to guides, and answering your readers’ questions.

8. Not Capturing Leads (ignoring email marketing)

This is one of the most common mistakes of beginner bloggers. At the beginning of their blogging journey, bloggers feel overwhelmed with everything they have to do to grow their blog, and they tend to push aside (I admit, I am to blame for this as well).

However, every blogger who makes more than 5 figures a month with their blog will tell you they regret not starting an email list to capture leads right from the start.

Your email list is one of the most profitable assets you can build for your business. These are the most engaged readers who will buy the products you promote as an affiliate and your own products once you release them.

9. Promoting Products You Don’t Believe In

Make your blog a brand. Why? A brand is not only about the high quality that the readers can expect over and over again but also about generating trust with your readers! When your readers trust what you have to say and see you as an expert in your field, they know they can also trust your recommendations.

Bloggers make a lot of money by only promoting products they use and believe in. These products should also be 100% relevant to and helpful to their audience.

I learned a great example from Michelle Schroeder-Gardner in her course Making Sense of Sponsored Posts. Michelle’s blog is about personal finance for people trying to save money and manage it well.

When a luxury travel company approached her to write a sponsored post on her site (offering her a big commission for that), she refused.

Why? Because her readers are trying to manage their budgets and make smart choices with their money, and recommending that they spend all this money on a trip is not aligned with her brand and the helpful content she has on her blog.

10. Starting a Blog Without Planning How You are Going to Monetize it

As Lewis Carol famously said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.”

If you pick a blogging topic that you like and just start writing without planning how you’re going to make money with this blog, you’ll end up with a hobby.

Plan your blogging strategy before you start! Here are some things to consider:

  • Is this niche highly searched on Google? Do not plan according to the competition only.

You might find low-competition niches that you can rank fast with your blog posts. However, low search volume usually means low earnings from ads and affiliate commissions.

Both factors, monthly search volume and competition, are important to determine if this is a good niche for you to pursue.

⇒Here is a step-by-step guide on how to do keyword research

  • How are you planning to make money?
    • If you plan to make money mainly from affiliate marketing, are there specific products in this niche that you know already and would love to recommend? Is the commission high enough to make the money you want every month?

    • Are you going to create your own product in this niche? Is it digital or physical? Is there a high demand for this product, and does it solve your audience’s problem?

11. Relying only on Google for Organic Traffic

Think about it: if you only rely on search engines to bring traffic to your blog and your entire blogging income depends on that traffic, what will happen if Google’s algorithm changes?

The most important pages that make you money from ads or affiliate marketing can vanish from the search engine results, and your income will disappear.

To prevent it and build a solid business, you should create another free source of traffic to your site. This could be an email list or a social media following.

I’ve already suffered from Google algorithm changes twice, which is why I’ve been active on Pinterest, right from the start of my blog.

I’ve been applying Sophia Lee’s Pinterest strategies from her Pinterest course to build my Pinterest following. Perfecting Pinterest is one of thetop Pinterest courses for bloggers.

12. Not Blogging Consistently

To build a successful blogging business you MUST post consistently on your blog. If you post 3 times a week and then stop for a few weeks and start again, you will lose momentum and your traffic will be pretty low.

If you know you can commit to writing blog posts only once a week, then do that and stick to once a week. You can always increase the number of posts you write a week, as you gain more blogging experience.

Don’t feel guilty if you can only post once a week; I have done that for two years, and my results have kept growing.

Blog content writing mistakes

13. Not Following a Content Calendar

Are you wasting time each week trying to find the perfect keyword for your next post? Many beginner bloggers Jump from one topic to the other instead of covering one topic at a time.

Well, this is one of the most common blogging mistakes, and I used to do it myself for months until I learned how to create and plan the perfect content calendar from Sophia Lee in her Perfecting Blogging course.

You can create a great content calendar based on your niche, trends in your niche (based on Google Trends), Pinterest trends, keyword research tools, and more.

A content calendar will save you hours (!) per week in planning and researching and will help you achieve faster results, writing about new trends at the right time and before they get too competitive to write about.

14. Writing about yourself instead of writing for your readers

Writing a blog is all about your readers. What are the questions they need answers to, what are the challenges they are facing? Writing blog posts they’re looking to read is the key to your blog success!

A big mistake is writing about the things you like, the topics that interest you most, without researching what is actually being searched on Google about your niche.

The best blog posts are listical posts and how-to guides that cover specific topics that your readers are searching for every month on Google.

AI Content Generation Mistakes

15. Not Editing AI Generated Content

I know creating all your content with AI is tempting—just one click and days of work saved!

However, you should know that it can destroy your blogging business completely, and here is why –

  • Google doesn’t like content solely generated by AI. It values personal experience and unique content that can add more value to the reader.

If Google detects that all your content is generated automatically, it will not rank your posts and might even deindex your site (which means removing all your pages from search results).

  • Your readers will not find your content engaging, so they will not spend a lot of time on your site and will not click on your affiliate links.

Readers can tell when the content sounds robotic and not human.

People connect with people, which is why the most beneficial content would be to hear about your experiences and struggles along the way.

The best solution is to edit the AI-generated content. Editing means adding your tone of voice, checking the facts, adding your experience, maybe adding a bit of humor, and overall making it your own!

16. Blogging without Fact-Checking Your AI Content

Generative AI models like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini can sometimes hallucinate and make up stuff. This is why it is crucial to fact-check this content and make necessary changes before you hit publish.

If you are knowledgeable about the topic you are writing about, you will be able to edit it quickly with new information.

However, when the topic is something you know little about, you’ll need to research it on Google or YouTube to ensure that all information is correct.

17. Not Using AI Content Detection Tool

AI content detection tools can quickly diagnose if specific content was generated by AI or not and also check for plagiarism. In simple words, these tools can tell you what Google might think of your content if it were to be published as is.

These tools can help you tremendously, avoid common mistakes like publishing content that is duplicated content or content that can easily make by Google as spam.

If you are heavily using generative AI models to write big chunks of content for you, the best recommendation is to use an AI content detection tool once you finished with your article.

Some of the AI content detectors are Smodin, Hive, and Neuronwriter Plagiarism Checker.

18. Not Publishing an AI-Generated Content Disclaimer on Your Site

Writing a blog post these days can include many steps, some of which involve the help of AI. From researching the topic of your blog post to writing the content. Optimizing for SEO using AI and so much more.

However, few bloggers know that if you create content using AI (and that includes images on your site), you need to have an AI content disclaimer to legally protect your blog and prevent lawsuits and money loss!

Blog Marketing Mistakes

19. Relying only on one social media platform for sharing your posts

Having another traffic source besides Google is excellent, and it is the first step to building a solid blogging business.

However, as your social media profile is not your asset (like your blog), you are always at risk of it being shut down, causing you to lose all your traffic and followers.

Social media profiles are being shut down every day for several reasons, most of the time without giving you any explanation whatsoever. The solution for this is two-fold –

First, build a following on another social media platform where your audience spends a lot of time.

Second, direct your followers to a lead magnet so you can capture their email addresses and connect with them outside of the social media platform.

That way, if the worst happens and your social media account is shut down one day, you already have an email list to engage with and invite your followers to follow you on another social media platform.

20. Not Creating Social Signals for Your Website and Blog

Think about brands that you have known online for years. Are they active on multiple platforms? Are they advertising and posting content in different forms and on various social media platforms?

In the same way, Google will expect your blog to appear on the web and for its name to be mentioned on social media, forums, and other blogging platforms, like Medium.

Always think of your blog as a brand online and act the same way as big brands do.

Not everyone wants to show their face on camera or become an influencer. I get it; I’m an introvert myself. You can create an AI influencer that will do all the hard work for you! Check out how to use an AI influencer for your blog!
